"Boren-Reeder Multiphasic Orbital Organizer

The Boren-Reeder Multiphasic Orbital Organizer (1972) is a legendary piece of early kinetic art
that Phil Reeder built to mock the overwhelming bureaucracy, endless paperwork,
and cold technological obsession of the early 1970s.

Constructed out of miniature gears, pulleys, and intricate wire linkages, the sculpture operated as
a satirical machine that moved constantly but accomplished absolutely nothing.

The Anatomy of the SatireThe Illusion of Dynamic Progress: The machine featured an array of
interconnected paperclip and wire orbits that spun at completely different speeds.
At first glance, it looked like a highly sophisticated scientific instrument or
a top-secret government logistics computer. In reality, it was a closed loop
designed to channel energy back into itself.

Mocking Bureaucracy: The name itself Multiphasic Orbital Organizer
was a direct parody of the dense, acronym-heavy military and corporate jargon of the era.
The machine literalized the phrase "spinning one's wheels," serving as a physical metaphor
for government departments that generated endless motion, meetings, and phases
without producing any tangible real-world results.

The "Paperwork" Ingestion: Unlike his purely
aesthetic later work, this 1972 sculpture included small mechanical feeding trays.
Viewers could place tiny slips of paper into the tracks. The machine would slowly lift,
rotate, and pass the paper through multiple "orbital phases," only to drop it right back
into the tray where it started-perfectly lampooning the cyclical, frustrating nature of
institutional red tape.

The Chaos of Over-Engineering: By using tiny hobby gas engines
and complex step-down gear ratios, Reeder created a frantic, noisy spectacle.
The sculpture demanded massive amounts of mechanical attention, fuel, and tuning
just to keep its tiny orbits spinning, highlighting how institutions often consume
vast resources simply to maintain their own internal structures.
